Education

According to the South Carolina Policy Council, only 50% of students who enter the ninth grade in our state ever receive their high school diploma. This crisis should be a top priority for our next state senator.

In order to better prepare our students to compete for jobs in the 21st century global economy...

  1. more of our education dollars must end up in the classroom
  2. our teachers and principals must be free from so much red tape
  3. parents must be empowered with more choices and options
  4. consistent accountability standards should be in place

We must commit to making our public schools better. We can no longer accept the current mindset that minimum standards are good enough. As a businessman, I have observed that competition brings out new ideas which raise standards for us all. Increasing competitive choices in education will lead to improvement in education. We can observe these improvements now. Although currently limited, public school choice, magnet schools, charter schools, the Governor's schools and vocational schools have all offered and demonstrated educational improvements.
